The Cheong Why Wee Family is currently into its sixth generation, counting the Patriarch as the first generation. An estimate of the number of descendants (including those who have passed on over the years) would be in the region of over 200 individuals. In the early days, most were born and raised in Kadang village. Later some set up home in Melaka town. Over time, however, an increasing number have left the state to further their careers or because of marriage. The concentration of family members outside of Melaka seems to be heaviest in the Klang Valley (Kuala Lumpur/Petaling Jaya). Other states and countries where a few have taken up residence are the states of Negri Sembilan and Johor in peninsular Malaysia, and Singapore, Sweden and Australia. Identifying who are descendants of Whye Wee is
relatively easy in the case of the male members. Each of them, depending upon
which generation they belong to, will have one of the names listed in the
Generation Names box on the left, as their first
name. This consistency in the use of generation names
as the first name, however, does not extend to female member of the family
and thus makes them more difficult to identify. In limited cases, whether a
certain female Cheong is a Whye Wee descendant or not, can be ascertained by
comparing her first name with the second name of the male descendants. If
similar, the possibility exists that she is of the family. For example,
Cheong Jin Neo is the sister of Cheong Tiong Jin, Keng Neo the sister of Sian
Keng and Hoe Neo that of Koon Hoe. |
